Yoga therapy

Integral therapy for a wide range of physical and mental health topics

Hi, I’m Skylar. (MsC, C-IAYT)

Along with my yoga therapy certification, I bring qualifications and experience with:

  • Somatic coaching

  • Massage therapy including pre / post operative massage & scar care

  • Trauma-informed
    Mindfulness & Compassion

  • ADHD / Autism

  • Embodied consent

  • Sexuality, intimacy & gender

What to expect?

I always start with taking the time to listen to you, your story, goals and any symptoms (physical, emotional, psychological, etc) you might be having. Depending on your goals and symptoms, there may also be an assessment of strength, mobility and breathing.

From there I offer session options which are fully tailored to you in collaboration with you. I generally work by offering different options for you to choose from rather than telling you what to do. Sessions commonly include activities such as: coaching, movement, breathwork, mindfulness, yoga nidra, massage and may integrate things you already enjoy or that your doctor, physical therapist or other provider have recommended.

Sessions aim to increase your self-awareness and connection with your body, while supporting:

✔️ Your wellness and self-healing capacity

✔️ Reduction of unwanted symptoms

✔️ Movement towards your goals

✔️ Greater ease with yourself, your body and the challenges and stresses you face

Yogic wisdom and science agree that the mind and the body are interrelated and can work together towards health or illness. Yoga therapy aims to increase health and wellbeing by working with the body, mind and spirit to create conditions that support health and inner balance. Yoga therapy can be done alongside other treatments and medical care. Sessions are always tailored to you and might include therapeutic movement, breath work, relaxation, visualisation, yoga nidra, mindfulness, meditation, lifestyle advice, sound, art, philosophy, clinical somatics, massage and/or other therapeutic techniques.

Who is Yoga Therapy for?

Yoga therapy views people and health holistically and looks to reduce suffering and increase wellbeing. Yoga therapy is NOT just a 1 on 1 yoga class. It integrates medical, psychological, health coaching, yoga knowledge and any other qualifications the therapist might have to offer effective health and wellness support for a wide range of physical, mental and emotional health issues. It is complementary to any other medical, psychological or therapeutic care you may be receiving. Research efforts continue to show it’s effectiveness and it is increasingly recommended by healthcare providers as part of a holistic treatment program for stress, anxiety, sleep, pain, mobility, heart disease, cancer, and much more.

Yoga therapy is often experienced as enjoyable and encouraging and is:

✔️ Suitable for people with no yoga experience, advanced Yogi’s and everyone in between

✔️ Accessible for those with injury, physical limitations and fatigue

✔️ Effective whether done online or in person

✔️ A way to connect to your body and take practical ownership of your health and wellness

Can yoga therapy really help with all of these things?

One of the beautiful things about yoga is that it contains a range of diverse practices developed to help reduce suffering. Western science is still discovering all the ways that these practices can impact the varying systems in our body and mind in beneficial ways.

A key reason why I’ve completed 1000+ hours of training in biomedical knowledge, psychological knowledge and yoga knowledge, is to be able to tailor treatment to you so that it is therapeutic and safe. In other words, there’s more to yoga therapy than just being a well intentioned yoga teacher.

Many clients report that yoga therapy was a powerful time for them that empowered them with tools and skills they could use for long after the work together was finished. Throughout the process we will regularly evaluate and tailor the treatment. Read more about what clients have to say below.

“When I started yoga therapy, I wasn’t sleeping well, I had high blood pressure and chronic lower back pain. After 8 sessions, my blood pressure was back to normal, my back pain was significantly reduced and I had tools to help me fall back asleep at night if I woke up. I can’t recommend working with Skylar high enough.”

— R.T.

What people are saying.

When I started yoga therapy I was recovering from burnout. I didn’t like yoga but heard yoga therapy could be helpful so I tried it. I had no energy and my thoughts just ran in circles. I’m not sure how they did it but it really felt like every session was exactly what I needed on the day. If I was exhausted, I left feeling more energized. If I was stressed, I left feeling calmer. After a few months of working together, I noticed a big overall impact. My energy increased, I made important changes in my life and I learned how to take better care of myself. Thank you!” - F.M.

I was recovering from a shoulder injury when I started yoga therapy. I had worked with a physical therapist but hit a plateau. Over the months of yoga therapy, I discovered so much about my body and mind and found ways to support my recovery. The pain I experienced went away and my range of motion improved. Alongside the recovery of my shoulder, I was surprised at the other improvements in my life. It’s like I found a new way of living that left more space for me, increased my confidence and even reduced the anxiety I was experiencing.” - J.W.

“Yoga therapy offered me a safe space where I learned ways to take care of myself that have truly made a difference in my busy stressful life.”

— A.M.
